Spinal osteoarthritis has been suggested as a risk factor for vertebral fractures. However, results are conflicting: most of the data are focused on the lumbar region, and referred to postmenopausal women, whereas data for men are scarce. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between spinal osteoarthritis and vertebral fractures in men over 50 years of age. The results suggest a positive relationship between radiologic osteoarthritic changes at the thoracic spine and prevalent vertebral fractures in men more than 50 years of age. Osteoarthritis may act as a local risk factor, in addition to other mechanical factors, resulting in a greater propensity to fracture, especially at the mid-thoracic region.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) induces bone deterioration, while mechanical stimulation promotes osteocyte-driven bone formation. We aimed to evaluate the interaction of acute exposure (24h) to high glucose (HG) with both the pro-survival effect conferred to osteocytic MLO-Y4 cells and osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells by mechanical stimulation and the interaction of these cells with osteoclast precursor RAW264.7 cells. In conclusion, this in vitro study demonstrates that HG exerts disparate effects on osteocyte mechanotransduction, and provides a novel mechanism by which DM disturbs skeletal metabolism through altered osteocyte-osteoclast communication. To evaluate the impact of a multifactorial intervention to promote bisphosphonate deprescription after over 5 years of use (BF5y) in a health care organisation (HCO) in Gipuzkoa (Spain) and to compare it with the standard intervention in other HCOs in the Basque Health Service-Osakidetza.CONCLUSIONS: Standard and multifactorial interventions are very effective in reducing unnecessary treatments with bisphosphonates. The multifactorial intervention is more effective than the standard one, although more complex to implement.

The objective was to analyze primary and secondary interventions carried out in individuals diagnosed with femur fragility fracture at Teruel in 2014.

CONCLUSIONS: Primary pharmacologic prevention and assessment of osteoporosis or risk of fracture are unfrequent in our health district.. Although pharmacologic treatment is prescribed more frequently in Teruel than in other areas after a hip or vertebral fracture, additional measures should be taken in order to improve fragility fracture prevention.

The incidence of osteoporotic fractures is lower in countries in the Mediterranean basin. Virgin olive oil, a key component of the Mediterranean Diet (MDiet), with recognised beneficial effects on metabolism and cardiovascular health, may decrease the risk of osteoporotic fractures. The aim to this study was to explore the effect of chronic consumption of total olive oil and its varieties on the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures in a middle-aged and elderly Mediterranean population.

Higher consumption of extra-virgin olive oil is associated with a lower risk of osteoporosis-related fractures in middle-aged and elderly Mediterranean population at high cardiovascular risk.

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of densitometric osteoporosis and vertebral fractures in Spanish men aged ≥50 years, and to study how the relationship between them may change depending on how osteoporosis is diagnosed. A community-based population of 1003 men aged ≥50 years was studied. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by DXA at the lumbar spine, femoral neck and total hip. Vertebral fractures were assessed by lateral thoracic and lumbar spine radiographs.

The 3D distribution of the cortical and trabecular bone mass in the proximal femur is a critical component in determining fracture resistance that is not taken into account in clinical routine Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) examination. Models and measurements provided by the “3D-DXA” software algorithm were evaluated using a database of 157 study subjects, by comparing 3D-DXA analyses (using DXA scanners from three manufacturers) with measurements performed by Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT).

OBJECTIVE: To describe cortical and trabecular volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), bone mineral content (BMC), cross-sectional area (CSA), and bone strength indexes (BSIs) in adolescent endurance-trained cyclists (CYC) and compare them with controls (CON). CONCLUSIONS: Adolescent CYC in this study showed lower values of BMC and vBMD at determined sites of the radius and tibia than CON, some of these differences were explained in part by their lower body weight. However, even further adjustment,some differences remained, which indicates that further longitudinal studies are needed to better understand if cycling influences these differences.

Evidence to support an analgesic role for bisphosphonates and denosumab is weak. Bisphosphonates and denosumab appear to be beneficial in preventing pain by delaying the onset of bone pain rather than by producing an analgesic effect per se.

The influence of the orientation of rat bones on their mechanical response is analyzed in this research. 28 femora obtained from 14 Sprague-Dawley rats. This result confirms that the mechanical properties of the bone tissue depend on its position in the cross-section and provides a reliable explanation to understand the response of the bones when subjected to bending tests.
