Fractures of the proximal femur constitute a major public health problem, with an annual incidence in Spain of 7.6 cases per 1000 inhabitants over 65 years of age. Between May 2010  and December 2016, 33 (median age, 86 years-old) of the 2625 hip fractures were classified as simultaneous extra- and intra-capsular ipsilateral fractures. CONCLUSION: The incidence of concomitant ipsilateral extra- and intra-capsularfractures of the proximal femur must be taken into account in patients over 65 years of age.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is associated with an increased prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia. They aim to evaluate the use of the World Health Organization Fracture  Risk Assessment (FRAX®) tool in these patients to assess 10-yr risk of fracture.

Bariatric surgery is one of the most common surgeries within developed countries due to the increase in morbid obesity that has been observed in the past decades.The short-term alterations in the metabolism of calcium and vitamin D are well known after these procedures; however, the clinical and biochemical consequences  may not be detected for years or even remain undiagnosed.

The skeleton is the most common site of colonization by metastatic cancers. Zoledronic acid (ZA) has been shown to be effective for the treatment of bone metastases regardless of whether the bone lesions are osteolytic or osteoblastic. Biochemical markers of bone turnover may be useful tools to quantify the degree of bone remodeling in the presence of bone metastases. The aim of this work was to establish the correlation between tumor dispersión (bioluminescence) and biochemical markers of bone turnover in two osteolytic and  osteoblastic metastasis models in mice.

They found that the best biomarkers for the diagnosis of both osteolytic and osteoblastic metastasis are formation markers, especially BGP.Moreover, these markers can be useful in the follow-up of the treatment with ZA in both types of metastasis.

Ti-based alloys have increased importance for biomedical applications due to their excellent properties. In particular, the two recently developed TiZrPdSi(Nb) alloys, with a predominant β-Ti phase microstructure, have good mechanical properties, such as a relatively low Young’s modulus and high hardness.  Results suggest that the TiZrPdSi(Nb) alloys can be considered  as excellent candidates for orthopaedical uses.

This meta-analysis aims to determine the effects of regular swimming on bone mineral density (BMD) in young adults (18-30 years). Young adult swimmers present similar BMD values than CG and lower values than HIGH.

HIV infection has been associated with reduced bone mineral density (BMD). Antiretroviral therapy has a deleterious effect on BMD, but its effect on bone fragility is not clear. Long-term treatment with TDF-FTC leads to impaired bone health, not only in terms of BMD, but also in terms of bone quality, another determinant of overall bone strength. To complement BMD-based predictions, these other techniques may also be used to identify patients with excess fracture risk.

Paget’s disease of bone is the second most common bone disease after osteoporosis. It is characterized by focal regions of highly exaggerated bone remodeling, with abnormalities in all phases of the remodeling process. This study aims to investigate the hypothesis of a possible British origin of Paget’s  disease of bone by studying the worldwide geographic distribution of cases identified in ancient skeletons excavated from archaeological sites. The methodology consists in reviewing cases of Paget’s disease of bone described in the literature.

Abdominal CT images obtained for other reasons can identify patients with osteoporosis BMD without additional radiation exposure or cost. Uncalibrated values at L1 can detect more osteoporosis patients with spinal compression fractures than DXA in oncologic patients.
