The European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO) recommends optimal dietary protein intake of 1.0-1.2g/kgbodyweight/d with at least 20-25g of high-quality protein at each main meal, with adequate vitamin D intake at 800IU/d to maintain serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels >50nmol/L as well as calcium intake of 1000mg/d, alongside regular physical activity/exercise 3-5 times/week combined with protein intake in close proximity to exercise, in postmenopausal women for prevention of age-related deterioration of musculoskeletal health.

Malnutrition assessed by CONUT was very frequent in patients with liver cirrhosis. CONUT score inversely correlated with liver function, while malnutrition stage directly correlated with BMD, fracture risk, and 25(OH)-D3. Total cholesterol showed a negative association with BMD in this population.

Fragility fractures were seen in 4.4 % of SLE patients. All patients with fragility fractures showed osteopenia at BMD. There is a high prevalence of bone loss in SLE patients, since up to 46 % of SLE patients showed low BMD. Total hip and femoral neck osteopenia were the most frequent findings correlated with low BMI. We found a lower prevalence of fragility fractures compared with other series.

A limited number of studies have examined the relationship between Mediterranean Diet and bone health, and they have reported conflicting results. On the one hand, adherence to a traditional MeDi has been associated with higher bone mineral density and lower fracture risk. The results of these studies could be attributed to the combined beneficial effects of individual components of the Mediterranean diet. On the contrary, several studies failed to show any association between adherence to the MeDi and indices of bone mass.

Women on statins and serum 25OHD levels above 20 ng/mL have greater BMD and less bone resorption than those without either of the factors. Differences, however, are not significant in women with only one of them. Vitamin D and statins seem to interact positively in their effects on bone metabolism.
