Paget’s disease of bone is the second most common bone disease after osteoporosis. It is characterized by focal regions of highly exaggerated bone remodeling, with abnormalities in all phases of the remodeling process. This study aims to investigate the hypothesis of a possible British origin of Paget’s  disease of bone by studying the worldwide geographic distribution of cases identified in ancient skeletons excavated from archaeological sites. The methodology consists in reviewing cases of Paget’s disease of bone described in the literature.

Abdominal CT images obtained for other reasons can identify patients with osteoporosis BMD without additional radiation exposure or cost. Uncalibrated values at L1 can detect more osteoporosis patients with spinal compression fractures than DXA in oncologic patients.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of a simple exercise program on the balance and strength of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrates that a physical exercise program based on balance and strength exercises, carried out with simple and readily available  equipment, is capable of significantly improving the strength and balance of women with osteoporosis.

Denosumab, a monoclonal antibody to the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL), might be a novel preventative therapy for BRCA1-mutation carriers at high risk of developing breast cancer. They tested the alternative but not mutually exclusive hypothesis that BRCA1 deficiency might cell-autonomously activate RANKL expression to generate cellular states with cancer stem cell (CSC)-like properties. Using isogenic pairs of normal-like human breast epithelial cells in  which the inactivation of a single BRCA1 allele results in genomic instability,we assessed the impact of BRCA1 haploinsufficiency on the expression status of RANK and RANKL.

The aim of this study was to show the presence of phosphorus and calcium metabolism disorders and the presence of urine lithogenic factors in women with osteoporotic fracture without previous urinary lithiasis. A cross-sectional study including 55 women with osteoporotic fracture surgically treated in the Trauma Department. CONCLUSIONS: Women with osteoporotic fracture showed several lithogenic factors in the urine studies, mainly fasting hypercalciuria.

X-Linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is the most common form of hereditary rickets caused by loss-of function mutations in the PHEX gene. XLH is characterized by hypophosphatemia secondary to renal phosphate wasting, inappropriately low concentrations of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D and high circulating levels of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23).This review summarizes current knowledge on phosphorus metabolism in XLH.

Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) is widely used in orthopedic surgery and bone tissue engineering because of its strong osteogenic activity. However, BMP-2 treatments have several drawbacks and many groups are actively exploring alternatives.
